Fish Lab

Step 1: As a group, let the Fish Master know you’re ready to begin.

Gloves are available if you would like them.

Step 2: Start gently exploring your fish. Answer the questions using your observations and the internet. Write answers in your notebook.

  1. Which fins are in pairs?
  2. What is the shape of the paired (pectoral, pelvic) fins?
  3. What is the shape of the tail (caudal) fin?
  4. What is the body shape? Flat? Torpedo? Disc? Long?
  5. What is the mouth shape? Big and wide? Small?
  6. Do both fishes have tongues? Teeth?
  7. What shape and size are the eyes? Where are they located?
  8. Lift the gill cover (operculum). What do you notice?

Step 3: Make sure all Discovery has explored the fish.

Step 4: As a group, let the Fish Master know you’re ready to clean the fish.

Step 5: Observe what’s in the stomach of the fish.
